Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL), one of India’s leading renewable energy companies, has announced a landmark commitment to achieving No Net Loss of Biodiversity by 2030. As part of this initiative, the company has integrated the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework into its core sustainability strategy, reinforcing its dedication to nature-positive growth.

The TNFD, a global science-led initiative supported by the United Nations and major environmental organizations, provides a structured approach for companies to identify, assess, manage, and disclose nature-related risks and opportunities. AGEL’s pledge reflects its ambition to go beyond traditional ESG compliance, aligning large-scale renewable energy expansion with biodiversity conservation, ecosystem resilience, and India’s broader climate leadership objectives.

    Aligning with Global Nature-Positive Standards

The TNFD framework is a globally recognized, science-driven initiative founded by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, the United Nations Development Programme, the World Wildlife Fund, and Global Canopy. It offers a structured approach for organizations to identify, assess, manage, and disclose nature-related risks and opportunities.

By aligning with TNFD guidance, AGEL is integrating biodiversity considerations into strategic decision-making, reinforcing its support for global conservation priorities while advancing India’s climate leadership.

From ESG Compliance to Nature-Positive Growth

AGEL’s adoption of TNFD principles marks a shift from traditional Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) compliance toward a more integrated, nature-positive approach. Beginning in FY24, the company conducted comprehensive assessments to map nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities across all operational sites.

“Nature is central to our growth story. By mainstreaming the principles of TNFD into our operations, we are identifying opportunities to build resilient ecosystems alongside renewable energy infrastructure,” said Ashish Khanna, CEO of AGEL.

    Commitment to Biodiversity and Reforestation

As part of its long-term sustainability goals, AGEL has committed to achieving No Net Loss of Biodiversity by 2030. The company plans to plant 27.86 million trees across its project locations and is a signatory to the India Business Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI and IBBI 2.0), reinforcing its dedication to biodiversity conservation.

    Leading India’s Renewable Energy Expansion

AGEL develops, owns, and operates utility-scale solar, wind, hybrid, and energy storage solutions. It currently operates a renewable energy portfolio of over 16.5 GW across 12 states, the largest in India, and aims to achieve 50 GW by 2030 in line with national decarbonization targets.

The company is also developing the world’s largest renewable energy plant—a 30 GW facility on barren land in Khavda, Gujarat, spanning 538 square kilometers, an area five times the size of Paris.

AGEL’s operating portfolio is certified ‘water positive’, ‘single-use plastic free’, and ‘zero waste-to-landfill’, reflecting its commitment to sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.
